Planning A Funeral

When the walk of life takes a different turn, we at Portland Christian Center want to be available to help you make a forward step.

We hope that this information will help in making the days ahead as clear as they can be. We ask that God would give you his comfort and strength during this most difficult time.

What to do first

  1. Contact Pastor Joel Slater at Portland Christian Center at 503-245-7735 for Pastoral Support and Angie Paulson to schedule the service. There is a Bereavement Team available to assist you during this difficult time.
  2. Select and make an appointment with a funeral home.

These are some decisions to make when planning a funeral:

  • Time of service
  • Location of service
  • Type of service: memorial, funeral, military
  • Use of chapel
  • Care of the body
  • Music
  • Burial site
  • Newspaper obituary (see listing of information needed below)
  • Pallbearers
  • Guest book
  • Photos/keepsakes
  • Flowers
  • Poems/quotes
  • Opportunities for donations

This is our suggested order of service:

  1. Greeting
  2. Scripture
  3. Prayer
  4. Song/music
  5. Sharing by friends, relatives and small group members
  6. Message
  7. Closing prayer
  8. Graveside comments
