EVALUATIONS:
Everyone MUST attend one basketball evaluation. They will take place at Portland First Church of the Nazarene as follows:
Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd Grade Boys/Girls - Monday, November 3, between 6:00pm and 8:00pm or Tuesday, November 4, between 6:00pm and 8:00pm.
3rd and 4th Grade Boys/Girls - Thursday, November 6, between 6:00pm and 8:00pm
5th and 6th Grade Boys/Girls - Friday, November 7, between 6:00pm and 8:00pm
Note: Evaluations (uniform sizing, parent meeting, and skill development) take approximately 45 minutes total. You may arrive anytime between 6:00pm and 8:00pm. Please enter on Level 2.

*Each team will have one practice per week and one game on Saturdays.

Upward 2009 Frequently Asked Questions
Q: When does registration begin?
A: Now. All registration must be done ONLINE. You can click on the registration link above to start the process.
Q: What is the registration fee?
A: The “early registration” fee is $80.00 and must be in by October 31. After October 31, cost is $90. Registration deadline is November 7, 2008. This fee includes entry into the league, complete uniform (including shorts), CD, and subscription to Upward’s Winner magazine. Please note that scholarships will be available for players who can’t afford the registration fee. However, we would like each player to pay as much as they can. A rule of thumb on scholarships is that we will split the cost $55/25 ($55 scholarship and $25 by the player, even if they need to make installments).
Q: When does practice start?
A: Practices begin the week of January 5, 2009. Practice nights are TBD. Practices will be once each week (in the evening) for one hour throughout the season.
Q: When is the first game?
A: Saturday, January 24, 2009. Games are played for one hour every Saturday through March 14, 2009. Game times are TBD and will depend on how many teams are in our league. I anticipate that games will start anywhere between 8:00AM and 6:00 PM.
Q: What gyms will we be playing in this year?
A: We have three gyms this year – the gyms at Portland First Church of the Nazarene, Valley Community Presbyterian Church and Portland Christian Center. Your player may play at any/all of these gyms.
Q: When will the season end?
A: The last game is Saturday, March 14, 2009. Season Celebration will be Sunday, March 15, 2009.
Q: Are teams co-ed?
A: No, boys and girls play on separate teams and do not play against each other.
Q – What is the basket height?
A: 8’ for 1-2 graders, 9’ for 3-4 graders and 10’ for 5-6 graders (although, based on coach input, we may make the baskets lower). Hopefully we will have 7’ baskets for K this year – we’re working on that.
Q – What is Upward’s motto?
A: “Every Kid is a Winner”. To make sure that our kids are all winners we will do the following:
- Introduce every kid before every game, complete with music, tunnel and fog machine.
- Make sure every kid receives the same amount of playing time.
- Match kids against other kids of comparable skill/experience in game situations.
- Use adult referees.
- Give every kid an award after every game.
