Couple Mentoring
What is a marriage mentor?
A marriage mentor is... a relatively happy, more experienced couple purposefully investing in another couple to effectively navigate a journey they have already taken.
| A marriage mentor couple: | A marriage mentor couple is not: |
| Has gone through a thorough training experience and application process | A mother or father. They are not to parent the couple they are mentoring |
| Willingly shares what they know (in a noncompetitive way) | Automatically a pal or a buddy. |
| Represents skill, knowledge, virtue, and accomplishment because they have gone before the couple they are mentoring | On call for every little crisis. Time is limited to discussion about major situations, not minor ones |
| Takes a personal and heartfelt interest in the other couple's development and well-being | Necessarily committed long-term. The mentoring relationship may have a prescribed timeline or it may follow a natural cycle of its own |
| Offers support, challenge, patience, and enthusiasm while guiding other couples to new levels of competence | A professor. A marriage mentor is not to instruct in the traditional sense. Life experience is the teaching tool. |
| Points the way and represents tangible evidence of what another couple can become | A know-it-all. A marriage mentor's job is not to have all the answers. |
| Exposes the recipients of their mentoring to new ideas, perspectives, and standards | Perfect! In fact, many times a marriage mentor has had to overcome very difficult issues which helps them to help a mentee couple much more effectively. |
| Has more expertise in terms of knowledge, yet views themselves as equal to those they mentor |
