The School of Music is part of the Music Ministry of Portland Christian Center. We offer quality musical instruction in a safe environment to students of all ages and skill levels. Lessons are given weekly in church classrooms. Lesson fees are reasonable and comparable to those in the Portland area. One-on-one instruction is customized to the student’s skill level and learning style.
The School of Music contracts only experienced faculty holding music degrees and/or proficiency as professionals in their instrument. Complete background checks are performed on all instructors. Our instructors are active musically in their home churches and musical groups in the community.
THE VALUE OF MUSIC EDUCATION
Musical training is an important building block to life long skills like: self- discipline, patience, self esteem, coordination, concentration, team work, cultural understanding, and communication. Recent studies have provided evidence that music education produces physiological changes in the brain, which enhance children’s abstract reasoning skills and improves their abilities in mathematics, science, and engineering. Another study reported that early exposure to music enhances cognitive processes involved in language and reasoning. Best of all, music is fun and can be a source of enjoyment for a lifetime! It is never too late to begin or continue learning music, and our adult students enjoy developing their musical skills or exploring new musical expressions.
SCHEDULING
Lessons are scheduled in the afternoon or evening Monday through Thursday, depending on instructor and classroom availability. Daytime lessons are also available for home school or adult students. Short-term specialty workshops and group lessons may also be offered. There is a minimum enrollment of 4 or more students for classes and workshops. Workshops take place during weeknights or on Saturdays.
TUITION
An annual non-refundable registration fee of $30 for individuals or $40 for 2 or more family members is paid at enrollment and each school year (in September). Tuition for private lessons is $20 for weekly half-hour lesson (usually $80/month), or $38 for hour lessons (usually $152/month).Tuition is to be paid on a monthly basis by the first lesson of the month. (If lessons begin in the middle of the month, the cost will be prorated). Group Class rates vary depending on the length of the classes.
RECITALS
Participation in recitals or other performance opportunities is strongly encouraged. Recitals are scheduled twice a year in the church chapel. Additional performance opportunities may be arranged at Portland Christian Center or in the community.
